Narrative Comic Strip Therapy® - A Unique Approach to Healing
What if you could see your problem as a story and not just feel it?
What if the chapters that hurt the most could be laid out panel by panel, witnessed, understood, and ultimately rewritten in a way that feels true to who you really are?
That’s the heart of Narrative Comic Strip Therapy, a one-of-a-kind therapeutic approach created by Christine J.C. Ellwood.
What Is Narrative Comic Strip Therapy®?
Narrative Comic Strip Therapy® is a trademarked therapeutic modality that brings together the transformative power of narrative therapy with the expressive, visual language of comic strip drawing.
You don’t need to be an artist. You don’t need to know how to draw. What you need is a willingness to express your problem story in a new way, and the courage to see it differently.
Through guided comic strip-style drawing exercises, therapeutic visualization, and Reflective Witness questions, clients are gently supported to:
• Externalize their experiences, getting them out and onto paper
•. Visualize their story in a structured, panel-by-panel format
•. Witness their own narrative with compassion and curiosity
•. Begin to reconstruct their identity and rewrite their problem story
Why Comic Strips?
There’s something uniquely powerful about visual storytelling. Comic strips have a structure that includes linear panels. They create distance between you and the experience, which makes it possible to look at something that might otherwise feel too big, too painful, or too confusing to face directly.
When you draw your problem story, even with the simplest stick figures, something shifts. You move from being inside the experience to being able to witness it. And from that witnessing comes insight, understanding, compassion, and the possibility of change.
What Are Reflective Witness Questions?
One of the core elements of Narrative Comic Strip Therapy is the use of Reflective Witness questions. These are thoughtfully crafted questions that invite you to look at your problem with fresh eyes.
Rather than analyzing or judging what you see, these questions encourage curiosity. They help you notice things you might have missed, moments of strength, resilience, and agency that the dominant story may have buried.
Often, what emerges surprises people in the most meaningful ways.
