You Are Not the Problem — What Narrative Therapy Is and How It Can Help

Have you ever felt defined by your struggles? Like anxiety, depression, or a difficult relationship has somehow become who you are rather than something you’re going through?

You are not your diagnosis. You are not your worst moments. And you are not the problem.

This is at the heart of narrative therapy, and it might just change the way you see yourself.

What Is Narrative Therapy?

Narrative therapy is a collaborative, respectful approach to counselling that recognizes something important: the stories we tell about ourselves shape how we experience our lives.

From the time we’re young, we absorb stories: about who we are, what we’re capable of, what we deserve. Some of those stories are rich and empowering. Others are limiting, painful, or simply not true. And often, the most damaging stories aren’t ones we chose; they were handed to us by difficult experiences, relationships, or systems that failed us.

Narrative therapy helps you step back from those stories, examine them, and begin to author new ones.

How Does It Actually Work?

One of the core ideas in narrative therapy is something called externalizing, and it’s beautifully simple.

Instead of saying “I am depressed” we might explore “I have been living under the influence of depression.” Instead of “I am an anxious person” we might ask “How has anxiety been showing up in your life, and when has it had less power over you?”

This small but powerful shift creates space. Space to see yourself as separate from the problem. Space to recognize your own strengths, values, and resilience, even when they’ve been buried under a difficult chapter.

Together, in therapy sessions, we explore:

• The stories that have shaped your sense of self

•. Moments when you resisted or overcame the problem — your unique outcomes

•. The values and strengths that define who you truly are

•. How you want to rewrite the story going forward

Who Can Benefit from Narrative Therapy?

Narrative therapy is beautifully suited for:

•. Adults navigating identity, life transitions, grief, or trauma

•. Teens struggling with self-worth, anxiety, or finding their place in the world

•. Children who need a gentle, creative way to make sense of difficult experiences

•. Couples who feel stuck in painful patterns and stories about each other

•. Anyone who feels like the problem has taken over the story of their life

The Next Chapter Is Yours to Write

Your life is not a fixed story with a predetermined ending. It is being written right now … and you have more authorship than you may realize.

Narrative therapy is an invitation to look at your problem story with curiosity rather than judgment, to find the threads of strength and resilience that have always been there, and to begin living into a story that feels more true, more hopeful, and more yours.
